I'm one of the 89,000,000 people who
was denied health insurance by a regular carrier. When my Cobra
coverage ended. I found that no normal health insurance company that
operates in my state would write me a policy because I have a
prexisting condition.
Here is a Reader's Digest of my
conversation when I called one carrier.
Me : " Hello, I'm loosing
my Cobra coverage from my previous employer and I'd like information
from you on your available policies. "
Ins Rep : " Yes Mr Xxxxxx, I'd be
happy to help you. If you will answer a few questions we can get
started. Do you take any prescriptions ?"
Me : " Yes I do "
Ins Rep : " What do you take them
for ?"
Me : " I have Diabetes and
blood pressure issues. I also take Plavix for .... "
Ins Rep : " I'm sorry Mr Xxxxxx,
but we will not be able to offer you health insurance coverage. "
Me : " Let me guess ...
prexisting conditions. "
Ins Rep : " Yes "
Me : " and because the The
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has not taken effect yet
the insurance companies are not doing anything yet. “
Ins Rep : " Yes "
Me : “ And your hoping that a
new administration will overturn the law. “
Ins Rep : " Yes "
Me : “ can you tell me
honestly ? Will any carrier touch me ?”
Ins Rep : " No "
That's it …
Fortunately for me my home state has a
'High Risk Pool' insurance policy that I am trying to buy into though
I'm still jumping through hoops ATM.
The Affordable Care act is not perfect.
It needs help and care. Parts will go and parts will stay, but at its
heart its a good honest start. There are many good decent things in
this law, things that we need. Things that have been needed for a
long time.
