Effectively the media does not discuss this because we as a nation, many of whom are at least nominally 'Christian', choose to ignore this uncomfortable reality. Those who dare to speak of it or even mention its history are often dumped on by the press, members of congress and many politically active christian groups. 

The incident in Portland on a train this past week (CNN article) bring this more to light as racial hate groups often hold similar views and are mixed up with radical christians.

Three men stood up to a racist who was harassing two women on a train one of whom was Muslim. For their troubles two were knifed to death and the third is lucky to be alive.

These men are heroes and exemplify the better parts of what it should mean to be an American and a decent person.

I'd like to think this will result in an up swelling of people standing up against hate, intolerance and racism, but we are an apathetic and cowardly bunch so ... probably not.
